Discussion Text

Task: Write a discussion about 'Rainforests Should Not Be Logged'. Don't forget to think carefully about the way a quality discussion is set out and its language features. Once you have finished the discussion, check it against the teacher evaluation checklist below.

Rainforests Should Not Be Logged

There is an argument between logging companies and conservationists over whether rainforests should be logged for wood. In my discussion I am going to talk about both sides of this argument.

The conservationists believe that the logging companies are cutting down too many trees in the rainforest. Thirty one million hectares is being cut down each year. Half to three quarters of the worlds rainforest  is  being cut down for paper.

There are animals living in the trees that are being cut down. About twenty five thousand species of animals are dying each year which is an average of one hundred and forty a day as a result of this.

The trees in the rainforest take in the carbon dioxide  then  then give out the oxygen. If we cut down the tress there will be to much carbon dioxide and not enough oxygen for us to breathe which will cause global warming.

On the other hand the logging companies believe that logging is an important industry for a country because we use wood for many different purposes shelter and paper

Further more they state they can just replant the trees the cut down.

Also if you stop logging and import wood from other countries it would cost more. Also the logging companies employ over three hundred thousand people in Australia and they contribute about three hundred and twenty seven million dollars each year to the Australian economy.

In conclusion I agree with the conservationists and I think that rainforests should be saved and people should stop logging.

Learning Process & Self Evaluation:
Steps I went through to write this discussion: I went on the internet to find info then I read some books and found info as well.
I have learnt:
  • I have learnt about the rainforest and what happens in the rainforest.
I want you to notice:
  • All my information is put into my own words.
I am good at:
  • Putting the information that I found in my own words and  sentences.
I need to work more on:
  • The information that I found and the statistics that I have found.
My effort for this task has been: Quality My best work Could do better
  ü
Comment:  I think that I did well but not as good as I could do. I think that I  could do better if I had tried harder.
