Rainforest Rich Task

Background Information:
After learning about rainforests at school and developing an understanding of the need to preserve this special environment, you have volunteered to work for the Rainforest Action Network. Since joining the network you have been asked to develop a way of highlighting the problem of deforestation.

Fact Box

·        We're losing 33.8 million acres of tropical forest per year. Between 1960-1990, 1.1 billion acres of tropical forest were cleared.

·        We lose 100 species every day -- 4 species per hour -- due to tropical deforestation.

·        In Australia alone, 75% of Australia's tropical rainforest has been cleared since the late 1700's.

Task:
Part 1
- Develop a picture book that highlights the plight of our rainforests. The book should be in narrative form with accompanying original illustrations and it should demonstrate your knowledge of rainforests. The target audience is young primary school students. Include at the end of the book, a list of ten things that we can do in our schools and homes that would help preserve rainforests.

Part 2 - Develop and teach a lesson about rainforests to a group of Stage 1 students at our school. The lesson will be taught to your buddies in your ‘buddy’ class. You will need to include/show your knowledge of:

  • Features and layers of the rainforest.

  • Rainforest flora and fauna

  • Products of the rainforests

  • Deforestation
