THREE volumes of a very, very old set of recipe books written by the Earl of Sandwich sit in an antique shop on a bookshelf in their correct order. The three books are all exactly the same size - a half inch thick cover on each side and three inches of pages making up a volume.
A bookworm has for a long time been slowly eating through the volumes. It started on the outside of the front cover of volume one, and when found by the antique shop proprietor, the worm had eaten straight through to the last page of volume three.
How many inches of the volumes did the hungry bookworm eat through?
